According to the website HolidayInsights.com:
“On August 19, 1988, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5847 creating National Senior Citizens Day to be August 21.”
President Reagan, according to the article, went on to say:
“For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older.”
This Saturday is National Senior Citizens Day. It’s a time to remember those who have gone before and, at times, paved the way for the things we have today. It’s a time to celebrate the seniors who are near and dear to us and spend some time with them, thinking about them, and helping them.
